Charged Particle Detector

Charged particles are swept into a the charged particle detectors by the Sweeper magnet. The detector consist of a set of CRDCs (Cathode Read-out Drift Chambers), an Ion Chamber, a thin scintilator and a newly-installed CsI Hodoscope.

The CsI Hodoscope was constructed by Dr. Nathan Frank and students at Augustana Unversity in Rock Island, Illinois. The new hodoscope array consists of twenty five sodium-doped CsI crystals (3.25” x 3.25” x 2”) arranged in a 5 x 5 configuration. The array measures the kinetic energy of charged fragments with a resolution of approximately 1% for GeV energies. The improved resolution makes experiments utilizing reaction mechanisms such as (d,p) possible.
